Bierbeek opens Mevrouwkensveld skate park to promote youth engagement and outdoor activities

Bierbeek – Bierbeek has inaugurated a new skate park at the Mevrouwkensveld social housing estate on October 1, 2025, alongside a dog park, with plans for a future playground, promoting outdoor activities for residents, reports 24brussels.

According to VRT News, this skate park forms part of the broader recreational offerings in the Flemish Brabant province of Belgium.

“The idea for this skate park came about during the pandemic,”

stated Lisa Hermans (CD&V), Bierbeek’s Alderman for Sports.

“We wanted to focus on outdoor activities and give the community a place for young people to stay active.”

Impact of the Mevrouwkensveld Skate Park on Youth and Community

The temporary pop-up skate park was established ahead of the permanent park, allowing local skaters to test ramps and features while providing input on its design. Officials anticipate it will serve as a central hub for youth and foster outdoor activities within the community.

Interest in the skate park has prompted Bierbeek’s municipality to search for a permanent location. The current recreational area includes the skate park and dog park, with plans for a playground to enhance the community’s facilities.

Alderman Lisa Hermans (CD&V) emphasized that the project aims to benefit residents of all ages, declaring the initiative a success and highlighting its positive community impact.

“Seeing young people active and residents connecting makes me proud of everyone who helped make this happen,”

she remarked. The new park has also received praise from skaters. Sarah, a frequent visitor, expressed,

“I used to have to go skating somewhere else with my brother. Now we have a place close to home, and that is really nice.”

The construction of the Mevrouwkensveld skateboard park began in 2023, following requests from local youth. After evaluating potential sites, the municipality approved the Mevrouwkensveld area as the location.

The municipal council greenlit the project with an estimated budget of €120,000, including VAT. Following the customary construction timeline, the skate park was officially opened on October 1, 2025.
