The Impact of Fix My Street on Cleanliness in Brussels

Brussels residents can report issues in public spaces through an app and website known as Fix My Street. Reports can encompass a range of problems, from potholes and broken streetlights to damaged benches or litter.

Officials highlighted the user-friendly nature of this application. Users simply select a location on a map, write a brief note regarding the issue, and can include a photo if desired. The report is then directed to the appropriate city service, such as Bruxelles-Propreté or Bruxelles Mobilité, responsible for addressing the issue. Submitters have the option to request updates on the status of their reports.

The frequency of cleanliness complaints via the Fix My Street platform has consistently increased each year. In 2022, reports numbered 18,175, which escalated to 23,176 in 2023, and further surged to 29,717 in 2024.

Officials noted that the increasing volume of reports reflects a growing trust in Fix My Street as a reliable means for citizens to communicate issues to the city. This tool assists municipal workers in identifying areas needing attention and encourages community involvement in enhancing urban cleanliness.

Brussels Alderman for Public Cleanliness, Anas Ben Abdelmoumen (PS), expressed his appreciation for the rising engagement with the Fix My Street platform, thanking citizens for their proactive reporting. He emphasized that the city values immediate reports regarding cleanliness challenges to facilitate prompt resolutions.

By urging residents to report issues as soon as they arise, city officials aim to expedite street cleaning processes and ensure the safety of public spaces. The alderman reiterated the importance of collaboration between the public and city workers, emphasizing that joining forces can effectively contribute to maintaining a clean and welcoming Brussels for all.
