Kortrijk (24brussels) – Demolition has commenced in the Sion district of Kortrijk, marking the beginning of a substantial redevelopment project that will see the removal of 74 homes and the construction of 91 new units by 2028. The second phase, set to begin in 2029, will replace an additional 28 homes with 42 modern units under the auspices of Goedkope Woning.
According to VRT News, the demolition efforts are aimed at enhancing safety in the area. The local social housing association is spearheading the initiative, which focuses on replacing outdated buildings with contemporary homes that comply with current standards.
Upcoming Changes in Kortrijk’s Sion District by 2029
The redevelopment is structured in two phases. Currently, Phase 1 involves the demolition of 74 run-down homes, with construction of the new properties set to commence in the spring. This phase is anticipated to take approximately three years, after which residents of Phase 2 will be able to move into the newly built homes.
Phase 2 will commence following the completion of the first stage. By 2029, the remaining 28 old homes will be taken down, paving the way for the construction of 42 new homes. The revitalized area will offer a variety of housing options.
Local officials indicated that smaller families and individuals will have access to 1-, 2-, or 3-bedroom units, while larger families will be catered to with 4- and 5-bedroom homes. The overarching goal of this plan is to foster a safer, more inclusive, and modern neighbourhood.
The Sion neighbourhood was established in the 1970s as part of a social housing initiative to address the increasing demand for affordable housing in Kortrijk. Over the years, many of the structures became outdated or vacant, resulting in challenges such as squatting and vandalism. In response, Goedkope Woning launched a program in 2008 aimed at sustainably upgrading its older properties for improved living conditions.
