Ledegem – On the night of August 14, 2025, a severe accident occurred in Ledegem at the intersection of Moorsleedsestraat and Provinciebaan, injuring a driver of a white van. The driver of a black van fled the scene and was found two kilometers away. Both vehicles were totaled, prompting a police investigation, reports 24brussels.
According to NIEUWSBLAD, the collision took place around 10:20 p.m., damaging two vehicles significantly. The white van, marked with the City of Wervik insignia, was making a right turn onto Moorsleedsestraat when it collided with the black van traveling along Provinciebaan.
The driver of the white van suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. In contrast, the black van driver, who refused medical assistance, fled the area before emergency services arrived. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. The wreckage left the vehicles obstructing the road, causing disruptions to local traffic until their removal.
Investigation into the Black Van Driver’s Escape
Witnesses reported that patrons from nearby cafes rushed to the scene of the crash. A bystander noted that the driver of the fleeing vehicle exited his wrecked van and fled into a nearby cornfield. Law enforcement quickly deployed a drone for the search, ultimately locating him more than two kilometers away. Authorities are now evaluating whether impairment played a role in the driver’s decision to flee.
Both the white van and the black car-sharing vehicle have been declared total losses and will be sent to scrap. The injured driver of the white van was subsequently hospitalized with minor injuries, while the accident caused significant local disruption until the road was cleared.
In a similar incident in Antwerp in December 2022, a car-sharing driver hit a pedestrian near a parking area at night and fled. Police found him shortly after, suspecting he was under the influence. Another tragic event occurred in 2019 in Nieuwpoort, where a pickup truck collided with a Renault Twingo on the E40, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old driver. The pickup driver left the crash scene and was later discovered in a hospital.
