Paris – Foreign ministers from France, the UK, and Germany are scheduled to hold a phone call with their Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday morning, a French diplomatic source confirmed, reports 24brussels.
The upcoming discussion comes as European powers issued a 30-day ultimatum last month regarding the reinstatement of sanctions if a new agreement over Iran’s nuclear programme remains elusive.
According to the diplomatic source, the primary aim of this call is to address the pressure from European nations concerning the reintroduction of UN sanctions while reassessing the terms that could lead Iran to delay such a decision.
Abbas Araghchi stated on Wednesday that Tehran is prepared to pursue a “fair and balanced solution” to the ongoing nuclear issue, remarks made during a conversation with his French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barrot, who advocated for continued dialogue.
How does Iran view the snapback sanctions mechanism
Araghchi criticized the European attempts to initiate the UN sanctions “snapback” mechanism, describing it as politically and legally unjustifiable. He warned that such actions would exacerbate tensions while reiterating Iran’s commitment to a peaceful nuclear program, underscored by a recent agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In 2025, the European Three (France, Germany, and the United Kingdom) and Iran have maintained several communications centered on resolving the nuclear dispute, aiming to circumvent the reintroduction of UN sanctions and restore the nuclear deal’s framework.
The E3 has signaled readiness to enforce snapback sanctions if Iran fails to engage in meaningful negotiations and comply with IAEA inspections. Iran has previously issued warnings about severe repercussions should the sanctions regime be reactivated.
How have recent talks between Iran and the E3 progressed?
The latest diplomatic communication occurred in late August, amidst attempts by Iran and the European powers to mitigate the risk of sanctions reimposition. Following the inconclusive talks on August 26, 2025, both parties agreed to “maintain contacts in the coming days,” keeping avenues open for further negotiations regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.
