The European Green Party Calls for Urgent Action Against Russian Aggression

The European Green Party has urged the European Union to respond immediately to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine, advocating for stricter sanctions and expedited negotiations for Ukraine’s integration into the EU, reports 24brussels.

Co-chair Vula Tsetsi condemned the assaults, which resulted in the deaths of at least 14 individuals, including three children, and directly targeted the EU delegation in Kyiv.

“It is clear that the Kremlin has no interest in negotiations, but instead continues to rain bombs on Ukraine, confident in its impunity. The European Union must respond with stronger sanctions and ensure the full implementation of existing ones, as too many countries are currently circumventing them,” Tsetsi stated.

Tsetsi further emphasized,

“Meanwhile, Trump is pursuing a so-called ‘peace deal’ between Ukraine and Russia. But no agreement can legitimise aggression or allow borders to be redrawn by force. A just peace is only possible with Ukraine at the negotiating table, defending its territorial integrity. The European Greens stand firmly with Ukraine and its European perspective.”

Ciarán Cuffe, another Co-Chair of the European Green Party, reinforced this sentiment, declaring, “The people of Ukraine are heroically defending the future of a free and democratic Europe.”

“EU institutions must affirm Ukraine’s place in the EU by moving ahead with accession talks. National vetoes on foreign and security policy from governments like the Hungarian or the Slovak one undermine the EU’s ability to act. Treaty change is needed to change that. In these challenging times, we must remember that the EU is a peace project founded on shared values: freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and human rights,” Cuffe said.

In related developments, starting Friday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Latvia, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Romania. This trip aims to reaffirm EU support for member states grappling with challenges related to their borders with Russia and Belarus, while also discussing Europe’s security and defense strategies with national leaders and military officials.

In Riga, President von der Leyen will meet Latvian Prime Minister Evika Salina, where they will tour a drone manufacturing facility receiving EU backing. Later, in Helsinki, she will engage with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, focusing on Europe’s response to potential threats from maritime warfare targeting vital undersea infrastructure.

On Saturday, von der Leyen will continue her tour in Estonia, discussing defense matters with Prime Minister Kristen Michal and NATO military personnel. On Sunday, she will visit Poland to meet Prime Minister Donald Tusk and observe border operations with Belarus aimed at safeguarding eastern borders.

Her schedule includes a meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov to tour a major state-owned defense facility, followed by discussions with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda at the border with Belarus, addressing hybrid and conventional threats.

In Romania, von der Leyen will meet with President Nicușor Dan and Prime Minister Llie Gavril Bolojan to discuss cooperation on EU-NATO initiatives, particularly regarding maritime and hybrid threats.

Moreover, political groups within the EU Parliament are gearing up for the plenary session in Strasbourg from September 8 to 11. Highlights will include von der Leyen’s 2025 State of the Union address, followed by a debate with Members of the European Parliament. The session will also feature voting on various legislative proposals, including those related to package holidays, vehicle end-of-life, textiles, food waste, and Ukraine’s EU accession preparations.
