Helsinki – Finland’s President Alexander Stubb has indicated that there are no signs of Russia’s willingness to negotiate peace in Ukraine, asserting it is only a matter of time before the US President becomes frustrated with his Russian counterpart, reports 24brussels.
In an interview with the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, published on Saturday, Stubb, who was part of the European delegation recently in Washington, voiced his concerns over Moscow’s intentions. He stated that he does not currently observe any signs that Russia is prepared to engage in mediating a truce or peace.
“This is the main message I am currently trying to convey to U.S. President Donald Trump in our conversations,”
Stubb further noted, citing his belief that Russia aims to prolong the conflict in order to maximize its territorial gains:
“They [Russia] want to continue the war at least until the autumn to maximize their own territorial gains.”
Ukraine and its European allies have consistently warned that Russian forces might attempt to seize additional Ukrainian territory to enhance their bargaining position ahead of any prospective peace discussions.
Moreover, Stubb characterized a direct meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “unlikely” in the near term, stating:
“The Russian delaying tactics continue.”
How might Russia use territorial gains before peace talks?
Recently, Stubb also expressed concerns during high-level discussions with US officials in Washington, highlighting that Russia is strategically aiming to extend the war in Ukraine. He reiterated that Russia’s objectives remain unchanged: to assert itself as a superpower, divide Western unity, and hinder Ukraine’s independence.
Stubb underlined the importance of addressing Russia’s ongoing aggression, emphasizing its efforts to prolong the conflict and inflict continuous instability.
Why does Stubb stress NATO security guarantees for Ukraine?
As a nation sharing a lengthy border with Russia and a recent NATO member, Stubb has underscored the necessity of security guarantees for Ukraine. He compared the potential loss of Ukrainian land to the historical precedent of the United States ceding entire states, warning about the ramifications of such actions.
Stubb concluded that Russia’s activities and ambitions clearly demonstrate a desire to extend the war rather than engage in authentic peace negotiations.
