Four churches in Maasmechelen to be repurposed under Diocese of Hasselt plan

Maasmechelen – Four churches in Maasmechelen, including Meeswijk and Kotem, will undergo repurposing as part of a strategic plan by the Diocese of Hasselt, with final decisions contingent on structural surveys and community feedback, reports 24brussels.

As announced by VRT News, the Diocese aims to repurpose these churches in response to declining attendance and an overall reduction in the number of priests. The increased maintenance costs for these buildings have prompted a reassessment of their use, leading to the identification of several churches for repurposing.

The first church targeted for repurposing is in Meeswijk, which has seen the lowest attendance for religious services. The church in Kotem is also slated for a new purpose, with parishioners planned to join the congregation in nearby Boorsem.

Plans for the Churches in Maasmechelen

Churchgoers from Mariaheide will be redirected to St. Barbara’s Church in Eisden, as part of the Diocese’s efforts to streamline management of church spaces while sustaining religious life. The fourth church under consideration for repurposing will either be Vucht or Leut, with a final determination pending a structural survey to evaluate the safety and condition of both buildings.

Officials have yet to disclose the specific future roles of the repurposed churches. The process of repurposing is expected to take several years and will involve input from local residents, parish members, and heritage experts.

This initiative in Maasmechelen forms part of a broader plan initiated across Flanders a few years ago. In 2018, the Flemish government tasked municipalities and dioceses with formulating strategies for church buildings as worship attendance has continued to decline. Many parishes have merged to optimize resources and reduce costs. The Diocese of Hasselt began its review of church properties in 2020, seeking sustainable long-term solutions that honor both the integrity of faith and cultural heritage.
