Sint-Niklaas – The Grote Markt in Sint-Niklaas officially reopened on August 29, 2025, following extensive renovations that began in May 2024. The final touches included the installation of 120 trees and grassy areas, with a grand opening ceremony slated for spring 2026, reports 24brussels.
As reported by VRT News, the renovated square reopened just in time for the Vredefeesten (Peace Festival) taking place next weekend. To celebrate the occasion, an after-work event titled “Back to the Grote Markt” welcomed locals to enjoy the newly refurbished space.
“Not that much has changed, and we expected more greenery,”
This sentiment was echoed by visitors Seppe, Ilan, and Yenko.
“With trees and the lawn, it will definitely create a completely different look.”
Key Changes from the Renovation
“It’s been a long time coming, and we’re happy to have the opportunity to be here,”
Claudia Dalman of Graanmaat highlighted the economic challenges faced in the past year.
“Last year, our turnover was down to half, so weekends like this are very welcome. We hope everyone gives it a try and the weather cooperates. The turnout tonight is already exceptionally positive, and there’s definitely a great atmosphere.”
This weekend promises to be lively at the Grote Markt, with market stalls and fair attractions available throughout the day. Additionally, guided tours will be offered to inform visitors about the renovation and the transformative work completed in the square.
Children will have dedicated activities in a children’s village featuring performances by popular characters such as Bumba, Plop, and Nachtwacht. On Sunday morning, August 31, 2025, the city will provide a free breakfast for residents until supplies last, alongside the launch of a city balloon from the square as a sneak peek for the upcoming Peace Festival.
Originally scheduled to conclude two months earlier, the Grote Markt renovation faced delays typical of large infrastructure projects. However, the completion of most essential work now permits the Vredefeesten festival to occur as planned. Following the festival, the remaining renovations will continue.
The development includes the addition of a grassy area and roughly 120 new trees and plants, with full project completion expected by late November 2025. The square’s grand opening is anticipated for spring 2026.
This renovation is part of one of Sint-Niklaas’ most significant urban developments in recent years, aimed at modernizing the historic square while enhancing its cultural importance. The project focuses on redesigning the layout, improving accessibility, and increasing green space.
Despite initial plans for a July 2025 completion, the project is now on track with the pivotal reopening marking a new chapter for the Grote Markt, just ahead of the much-anticipated Vredefeesten festival set for the first weekend of September 2025.
