Londerzeel – Council member Guido Robberechts, along with officials Greet Ilegems and Bart Van Doren, has emphasized the urgent need for improved road access for farmers in Londerzeel, Flemish Brabant. They are advocating for better planning to accommodate farm vehicles, emergency services, and delivery trucks, amid rising concerns about safety and accessibility.

According to VRT News, local farmers face significant challenges navigating narrow streets, exacerbated by parked vehicles hindering movement. To illustrate the severity of the situation, Robberechts and the Business Guild drove a picker and a potato harvester through the town, highlighting the difficulties faced by agricultural machinery.

The officials noted that in many locations, these large machines struggle to pass through. Farmers often find themselves forced to maneuver past schools with heavy equipment, raising safety concerns. Robberechts pointed out that this issue extends beyond farmers, affecting delivery trucks and fire engines, which frequently encounter detours due to road constraints.

Improving Roads for Farmers and Emergency Vehicles in Londerzeel

Robberechts insists that Londerzeel’s planning must consider the diverse needs of all road users, including farmers, delivery drivers, and emergency services. He highlighted the detrimental impact of inadequate infrastructure on timely deliveries and emergency response. The council member is urging local authorities to engage with farmers and emergency teams during road planning discussions to enhance safety and functionality.

Emphasizing the importance of local agriculture, Robberechts stated that farmers require sufficient space for safe operations. With the increasing volume of traffic, it is essential to ensure that farmers have clear and secure routes. Their work is vital for food production and job support, warranting dedicated attention to their access needs.

In a recent tour of the region, officials Ilegems and Van Doren assessed traffic and road access challenges faced by farmers. This initiative underscored the genuine issues that impede agricultural productivity. Promising to relay farmers’ concerns to relevant departments, the officials recognized the necessity of integrating farmers’ needs into future road plans.

Last year, farmers in East Flanders raised similar safety and access concerns during harvest season. In response, officials convened with farmers and traffic experts to devise solutions, leading to new regulations for improved road signage and dedicated pathways for agricultural machinery.

The local government is now poised to implement changes that could significantly enhance the operational environment for farmers while ensuring the safety of all road users, reports 24brussels.
