What did inspectors discover during the November 2023 hunting grounds check in Boutersem?

Later that evening, inspectors identified a second vehicle about 450 meters from the first, also connected to the Lubbeek resident. This car was unlocked and parked close to more cardboard boxes resembling those previously encountered, which also contained feathers and droppings.

The vehicle’s papers indicated it belonged to a family member of the main suspect, leading authorities to suspect that the illegal release was premeditated with assistance from others. When questioned, the owner of the second car informed inspectors that he had arranged to meet with the suspect at the hunting grounds, where they planned to release pheasants for hunting purposes.

Following the initial findings, police conducted a search of the suspect’s home and uncovered several firearms and a significant quantity of ammunition. The suspect also possesses the land where the pheasants were released. When approached for comment, he declined to speak with the Nature Inspectorate.

This incident came to light in November 2023 during a comprehensive check of the hunting grounds, responding to prior public reports and concerns. These inspections aim to deter illegal hunting and safeguard wildlife, ensuring that all hunting activities comply with established regulations.
