Zeebrugge – A 56-year-old man was brutally beaten to death near Stella Maris Church in Zeebrugge, with two suspects fleeing the scene. West Flanders prosecutor Griet De Prest is leading the investigation, reports 24brussels.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on August 22, 2025, as the victim walked with his wife. Prior to the attack, the man had allegedly argued with two other men at a nearby convenience store.
Witnesses recounted that the assailants struck the victim from behind, unleashing a flurry of punches. Griet De Prest confirmed that emergency responders were unable to revive the victim, who died at the scene.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an extensive investigation, with police actively pursuing leads. The suspects reportedly fled shortly after the assault, prompting investigators to examine security camera footage and gather witness statements to aid in their identification.
According to a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office,
“We are reviewing security camera footage and conducting a neighbourhood investigation. The West Flanders federal judicial police are investigating the case under the supervision of an investigating judge. An autopsy will also be performed on the victim’s body.”
This violent outburst follows another incident in Brussels on May 4, 2025, when disturbances marred the Belgian Cup final between Club Brugge KV and RSC Anderlecht. Violence erupted across several neighborhoods, resulting in multiple injuries and arrests. The public prosecutor vowed to enact stringent measures against those responsible for the chaos.
