Mechelen – Construction has commenced on the Dahliastraat renewal project in Mechelen-Zuid, spearheaded by Alderman Patrick Princen. The initiative aims to enhance safety, increase green spaces, install new sewers, and is slated for completion by March 2026, reports 24brussels.

According to VRT News, work on Dahliastraat began a week ago. The project includes the installation of a new sewer system designed to separate rainwater from wastewater. The street will be redesigned to improve safety and accessibility, featuring wider sidewalks, safer crossing points, enhanced lighting, and a layout that encourages walking and cycling while minimizing traffic hazards.

How will Mechelen-Zuid’s Dahliastraat renewal improve safety and green spaces by 2026?

In addition to technical improvements and safety upgrades, more green areas will be created. Patrick Princen, Alderman for Public Works from Voor Mechelen, stated that the renewed street will be safer and more welcoming.

The Dahliastraat redevelopment will be executed in three distinct phases. During this time, Stuvas Ruzal will be closed to all vehicular traffic to maintain construction integrity and facilitate uninterrupted work.

During the initial phase, Kruisvelstraat may also experience vehicle restrictions, though access up to the work site will remain open from both directions. A detour via Tervuursesteenweg will be established to manage traffic flow. Starting in September 2025, residents can utilize a parking lot located behind the Geerdegemvaart municipal swimming pool.

The city anticipates that the Dahliastraat project will reach completion by the end of March 2026. Officials emphasize that this initiative is a crucial step toward enhancing local infrastructure and improving the quality of life in Mechelen-Zuid.

A similar renovation project was completed in Mechelen’s Zuid district on Doornstraat a few years ago, where old sewer systems were replaced by separate networks for rainwater and wastewater, accompanied by a redesigned street layout.
