MEP Veronika Cifrova Ostrihonova Critiques Slovak Government and Calls for EU Support for Ukraine
MEP Veronika Cifrova Ostrihonova expressed serious concerns regarding the Slovak government’s foreign policy, emphasizing its potential dangers during a recent interview. She asserted that the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin failed to yield any substantial progress in addressing the ongoing Ukraine conflict, critical of the lack of Ukrainian representation in any resulting dialogue, reports 24brussels.
Ostrihonova highlighted the necessity for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to be central in negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire or peace settlements. “This war was launched by Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified aggression, and Ukraine as the attacked party must be directly involved in shaping the conditions for its resolution,” she stated.
Furthermore, she urged that President Ursula von der Leyen should also be at the negotiating table, representing the collective interests of the 27 EU Member States. “The principle is clear: nothing about European security should be decided without Europe,” she added.
Addressing the Slovak government’s stance, Ostrihonova described it as “reckless and dangerous,” suggesting it undermines national interests while promoting neutrality in a manner that diminishes trust in NATO. “Such a stance weakens trust in NATO, the cornerstone of our safety and plays straight into the hands of those who want to divide us,” she warned.
On social media, she remarked that the ongoing engagement among European leaders, including Zelenskyy, von der Leyen, and Trump, indicates a potentially pivotal shift in the narrative surrounding the 3.5 years of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Ostrihonova concluded, “We will continue to fight for Slovakia’s real interests: security, prosperity, and a proud place in a strong and united Europe. Slovakia deserves leadership that strengthens its future—not one that trades it away for cheap populism and dangerous illusions.” Her statements reflect a strong pro-European and pro-Ukrainian stance, emphasizing the critical need for unity and robust leadership in facing pressing geopolitical challenges.
