Molenbeek Loses Bid for European Capital of Culture 2030

The European jury has announced its decision for the European Capital of Culture 2030, and Molenbeek for Brussels 2030 (MB2030) was not selected, reports 24brussels.

A spokesperson for the Molenbeek organizers stated, “While this moment may feel like a pause in our adventure, it is not an ending. What we have built together over these years is too strong, too alive, and too necessary to stop here.”

In their statement, they expressed admiration for the titleholder and affirmed their commitment to support the incoming European Capital of Culture 2030, emphasizing that MB2030 transcends the significance of a title to represent a collective effort to shape the cultural landscape of the community.

“And together we have achieved something extraordinary: thousands of neighbours, artists, families, teachers, shopkeepers, students, social and cultural workers, and artistic partners shaped a vision for Molenbeek and for Brussels that is open, generous, and deeply European,” they added.

The spokesperson emphasized the core value of generosity, or Sadaka, which remains integral to their initiatives. “It is alive in the bonds we’ve created, the projects we’ve launched, and the everyday acts of care and creativity that will continue to shape our city and our continent.”

Despite the setback, the organizers asserted that the energy and collaborations generated by MB2030 would persist. They intend to continue projects that enhance public spaces, empower youth, and integrate art into daily life.

“This moment is not about closing a chapter but about carrying our collective energy forward. Together, we have laid the foundation for a brighter cultural future in Molenbeek, in Brussels, and in the many communities across Europe facing similar questions of how to live together, care for one another, and create spaces of belonging,” the spokesperson noted.

Ultimately, MB2030 is characterized as not merely a project, but a movement founded on generosity and sustained by community engagement. The organizers remain resolute in their vision for a unified cultural approach that addresses contemporary challenges and fosters communal growth across Europe.
