Mortsel, Belgium – Mortsel’s City Hall will inaugurate a Children’s Council on November 23, 2025, open to students in 5th and 6th grades for a two-year term. This initiative aims to empower children to advise on key community issues such as school safety and leisure activities, reports 24brussels.
According to GVA News, renovation work at Mortsel City Hall, located in the province of Antwerp, is nearing completion. The facility will include a dedicated area for the Children’s Council, allowing young residents to voice their ideas and contribute to matters affecting their community.
The program seeks to engage youth in the decision-making process while fostering a sense of responsibility and teamwork through active participation in local initiatives. City officials emphasized that the council will ensure children’s perspectives are considered in municipal planning.

The Children’s Legislature will kick off on November 23, 2025, and run until June 30, 2027. Council members will convene to explore and provide feedback on topics pertinent to children, including school safety and opportunities for enjoyable leisure activities.
Participants are required to attend at least three meetings each school year at their designated institution, as outlined in their membership agreement. Parental consent is mandatory for participation. An introductory meeting on September 24, 2025, will outline member responsibilities, facilitate interactions with city officials, and clarify the council’s operational structure.
The concept of a Children’s Council was first proposed in early 2024 as part of a broader initiative to involve young residents in governance. The Mortsel City Council officially ratified the project in June 2024, establishing guidelines for member roles and selection. Preparations commenced later that year to recruit and train future council members.
