Limburg – On Friday, October 17, 2025, SAAMO has called on Limburg residents to display white sheets from their windows in recognition of World Day for the Eradication of Poverty, reports 24brussels.

According to VRT News, SAAMO is spearheading a campaign encouraging local individuals to participate in this initiative. The white sheets are intended to symbolize awareness, solidarity, and long-term solutions to poverty.

On October 15, 2025, a performance took place at Dusartplein in Hasselt, where an aerial acrobat captivated passersby with a dance on white fabrics, further stressing the campaign’s message.

How is SAAMO in Limburg raising awareness for poverty on October 17?

Lien Camps from SAAMO emphasized the significance of the white sheets in conveying their message.

“We ask everyone to hang a white sheet, tied securely, from their windows on Friday. You can also do this at work, clubs, or other community places,”

This action aims to foster discussions and highlight poverty as a collective concern among the community.

The performance by the acrobat at Dusartplein also delivered a poignant message.

“She shows how people get caught up in poverty and how, together, through connection and solidarity, we can untie the knots,”

the organization stated.

Through this campaign, SAAMO is calling for structural measures to address poverty. The organization is lobbying for public support to influence policymakers toward implementing long-term solutions. Proposed plans include ensuring that every individual earns above the European poverty line, providing equitable access to education with comprehensive scholarship information, increasing the availability of social housing units, and safeguarding funding for elderly care services.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been recognized annually on October 17 since 1987. Originally observed by more than 100,000 individuals at the Trocadéro in Paris, the day honors victims of poverty, hunger, and violence.

In 1992, the United Nations formally acknowledged this day with Resolution 47/196. In 2025, the emphasis lies on eradicating social and institutional maltreatment while ensuring effective support systems for families experiencing poverty.
