Sint-Pieters-Leeuw to implement 110 traffic counters for enhanced road safety

Sint-Pieters-Leeuw – This fall, Sint-Pieters-Leeuw will install 110 traffic counting stations as part of an extensive traffic study. Alderman Bart Keymolen and Mayor Jan Desmeth are calling on residents to propose locations for these stations to enhance road safety and traffic management, reports 24brussels.

According to VRT News, the initiative aims to monitor vehicle counts, speeds, and types during peak hours in key areas throughout the municipality. The data collected will provide critical insights into traffic patterns and help formulate targeted safety measures.

How will Sint-Pieters-Leeuw’s 110 traffic counters improve safety?

Alderman Bart Keymolen emphasized the importance of community involvement in this project.

“It is very important that the counting hoses are placed where speeding is common,”

he said.

“Our residents know the streets best. That is why we invite them to use the Leeuwdenkmee.be platform to show where measurements should take place.”

Residents can suggest locations for traffic measurements until September 17th, 2025, ensuring that the initiative reflects local concerns.

“This way, we can connect our residents’ expertise with concrete data,”

the municipality noted. The measurements are scheduled for October and November 2025. Mayor Jan Desmeth (N-VA) clarified,

“This will not happen during holidays or when there are detours because that could give a distorted picture.”

Data analysis will be conducted in 2026 to identify necessary safety enhancements. Potential measures may include average speed checks, lane cushions, and other traffic calming strategies. Mayor Desmeth underscored the objective to cultivate a safer environment for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians by integrating local insights with precise traffic data.

Traffic safety remains a long-standing concern in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw. Following numerous resident complaints about speeding near schools and busy intersections, the municipality began monitoring vehicle speeds on main roads in 2015. Subsequent studies have focused on streets notorious for traffic issues, including temporary traffic counts during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to assess changes in driving patterns.
