Stockholm – Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will take part virtually in the upcoming meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” this Sunday, ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the United States on Monday, according to a spokesperson from the prime minister’s office, reports 24brussels.

This gathering of European leaders follows a meeting in Alaska on Friday, where US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to reach a consensus on resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine. Importantly, Kristersson will not accompany Zelensky and other European leaders to the US on Monday, per the information provided by the Prime Minister’s office.

Who is co-chairing today’s European leaders’ virtual gathering?

As preparations unfold in Washington for President Zelensky’s meeting with US officials, European leaders are set to convene this afternoon to discuss the war in Ukraine. The virtual meeting will be co-chaired by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, alongside other allies of Ukraine.

This conference call aims to set the stage for the forthcoming meeting between Trump and Zelensky in Washington, during which leaders will deliberate on strategies to conclude the war in Ukraine. This follows Trump’s abandonment of his previous call for a ceasefire after discussions with Putin in Alaska.

What is the purpose of the Coalition of the Willing?

The primary objective of the “Coalition of the Willing,” established in 2025 amid the Russo-Ukrainian War, is to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and security throughout and after the conflict with Russia. The coalition comprises over 30 nations dedicated to providing military, economic, and diplomatic backing to Ukraine.

When was the last Coalition of the Willing summit held?

The most recent high-level meeting of the Coalition of the Willing occurred on August 13, 2025. This virtual summit was co-chaired by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The summit emphasized efforts towards a peaceful resolution to the Russo-Ukrainian War, addressing issues such as a ceasefire, sanctions against Russia, security guarantees for Ukraine, and a potential peacekeeping force contingent upon a successful cease-fire.
