Warsaw – Poland’s Foreign Ministry announced Thursday that the UN Security Council will hold an “emergency” session to examine Russia’s violation of the country’s airspace.
In a significant move, Poland called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Friday to address drone incidents in its airspace. Four other UN Security Council members have also reportedly requested a meeting, according to Reuters.
“Following Poland’s request, a UN Security Council emergency meeting will be convened regarding the violation of Polish airspace by Russia,”
The ministry posted the announcement on X.
Poland’s actions respond to a rare overnight operation, where NATO allies assisted in shooting down multiple Russian drones crossing into Polish airspace on Wednesday.

Poland reported it shot down Russian drones that had entered its airspace during an attack on Ukraine. Polish and Dutch fighter jets deployed in Poland were involved in the operation. Russian drones and missiles have frequently penetrated the airspace of NATO members including Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Romania.
The incursion on Wednesday marks the most serious cross-border incident involving a NATO member since the start of the Ukraine conflict.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric emphasized that Guterres is deeply concerned about reports of Russian military drones causing damage to residential areas in Poland.
