Leuven – University Hospitals Leuven has significantly upgraded its Mammography Department, adding four suites, five ultrasound rooms, advanced low-radiation machines, and a new stereotactic biopsy room. Radiologist Dr. Machteld Keupers commended the enhancements for their efficiency and comfort, reports 24brussels.
According to VRT News, the Mammography Department has been relocated to a more spacious and renovated area on the Gasthuisberg campus following an 18-month assessment. The new setup includes four state-of-the-art mammography suites, each equipped with the latest technology, along with five ultrasound rooms.
Enhancements in UZ Leuven’s Mammography Department
The hospital has upgraded its equipment and biopsy facilities to enhance patient care and safety. The three new mammography machines provide clearer images with reduced radiation exposure. Two of these machines are designed ergonomically, allowing nurses to work without unnecessary bending or straining. Additionally, a new stereotactic biopsy room is fitted with an ergonomic table that enables staff to take precise 3D-guided samples.
Breast screening services at University Hospitals Leuven are set to become more efficient, leading to shorter waiting times. Full operational improvements are anticipated by January 2027, as appointments are frequently scheduled up to a year in advance. The hospital has stated that these changes are part of a comprehensive initiative to streamline processes for all parties involved.
“We’ve been asking for a new mammography department for years,”
emphasized Dr. Keupers.
Patients can now quickly check in on-site via QR codes, eliminating the requirement for nurse assistance during registration. A staffed desk remains available for those who prefer personal interaction. The renovated space also includes modern infrastructure and a waiting area.
Dr. Keupers noted,
“It was frustrating to see everyone working so hard in often cramped spaces, with too few machines or overcrowded waiting rooms. Now we can work more efficiently in a more pleasant environment.”
University Hospitals Leuven has previously undertaken similar upgrades. A few years ago, its Radiology and Imaging Department underwent renovations to enhance patient experience, introducing new machines, including low-radiation CT scanners and high-resolution MRI devices to improve diagnostic accuracy. This initiative also created dedicated areas for various types of scans.
