Vilvoorde residents express concern over neglected cemetery maintenance

Vilvoorde – Residents of Vilvoorde are criticizing the overgrowth of weeds at the town cemetery. Alderman Jeroen Bergers (N-VA) attributes the issue to a lack of structured maintenance and planning. He has promised increased efforts and a long-term green space management strategy, reports 24brussels.

According to VRT News, locals are expressing outrage over the cemetery’s neglected state, with uncontrolled weeds sprouting around graves. Many have taken to Facebook, describing the situation as “scandalous,” “a real disgrace,” and “a lack of respect for the deceased.” They highlight that the cemetery has become increasingly difficult to navigate due to inadequate maintenance.

Actions by Alderman Bergers Regarding Cemetery Maintenance

Alderman Jeroen Bergers has acknowledged the complaints and admits that Vilvoorde has struggled with this problem for years. He was taken aback upon assuming his role to discover that the city lacked a comprehensive management plan for public green spaces, with maintenance decisions being made haphazardly.

Bergers emphasizes that the absence of proper planning is a key reason for the cemetery’s deterioration. He insists that structured management and long-term strategies are essential to restore the cemetery and demonstrate respect for those interred there.

Bergers identifies organizing maintenance of Vilvoorde’s green spaces as a paramount challenge for the upcoming legislative term and attributes some of the current issues to the previous administration’s management.

“It’s not rocket science,”

stated Alderman Jeroen Bergers.

“We simply need to determine which green spaces need maintenance, how often, and how many people are needed.”

Concerning the cemetery’s overgrown weeds, Bergers indicated that the parks department will intensify efforts while a long-term master plan is being formulated. He clarified that maintenance is a collective responsibility, with the parks department managing the greenery surrounding graves but prohibited from removing weeds that grow directly on them.

This issue of cemetery neglect is not isolated. In November 2023, at least 85 graves were vandalized in the Jewish cemetery of Marcinelle, Charleroi, and objects were stolen. Additionally, an antisemitic incident occurred in Kraainem, near Brussels, where a Jewish cemetery was defaced with graffiti, including swastikas and Stars of David. Local authorities and Jewish organizations condemned these acts, and investigations were initiated to apprehend those responsible.
