Flemish research centre imec and the universities of Ghent and Antwerp have signed new cooperation agreements with Japanese partners during a mission to Japan.
Imec renewed its strategic partnership with semiconductor equipment giant Tokyo Electron, focusing on sustainable chip development. It also signed a memorandum of understanding with RISE-A, a new Japanese ecosystem promoting chip technologies in sectors like automotive, aerospace and life sciences.
“Groundbreaking research is crucial if we want to compete globally,” said Flemish minister president Matthias Diependaele, who is leading the six-day mission. “Innovation remains key to excellence.”
Imec CEO Luc Van den hove stressed the importance of cross-border collaboration in the capital-intensive deeptech sector.

Ghent University signed a deal with Japanese agrotech firm Nichino, which will open an R&D centre at the Tech Lane Ghent Science Park. Until then, activities will be carried out at the university’s faculty of bioscience engineering.
Meanwhile, the University of Antwerp and Pharma.Aero from Mechelen have agreed to deepen collaboration in pharmaceutical logistics with Japanese partners ANA Cargo, Kansai Airport and Nippon Express.
