Jan De Nul Expands Role in Taiwan’s Offshore Wind Sector

Belgian marine engineering company Jan De Nul has signed a new contract with Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) to install export cables for the Formosa 4 offshore wind farm in Taiwan. The company will transport, install and protect 60 kilometres of subsea cables to bring the wind farm’s green energy to shore, reports 24brussels.

Located 55 kilometres southwest, Jan De Nul has also been selected as the preferred contractor for export cables on SRE’s upcoming Formosa 6 project.

Taiwan’s offshore wind sector has experienced rapid growth, developing over 3 gigawatts of capacity with 374 turbines in less than a decade. This places the country seventh worldwide, anticipated to surpass Belgium to claim sixth place later this year. Taiwan aims to achieve 13 gigawatts of capacity by 2030.

Active in Taiwan since 1990, Jan De Nul has been integral to the nation’s offshore wind expansion since 2017. The company offers a range of services including EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation) contracts, subsea rock installations, and cable laying.

”We have been at the forefront in supporting Taiwan towards its pathway to net-zero emissions in 2050.”

“We have successfully delivered several fully operational wind farms through large EPCI contracts,” said Wouter Vermeersch, Director Subsea Cables Offshore Energy at Jan De Nul. “We have been at the forefront in supporting Taiwan towards its pathway to net-zero emissions in 2050.”

In September, Belgian firm DEME announced it would manage the transport and installation of 35 foundations and the offshore substation for Formosa 4.
