Belgian honey producer Meli has announced its ambition to become Europe’s largest honey company by 2030. The statement coincides with the company’s centenary celebrations this year.
To achieve this goal, Meli plans to increase its production capacity by 50% and invest several million euros in the further automation of its packaging line. The expansion is expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2026. The company stresses that the move will not result in any job losses. In fact, a weekend shift has recently been introduced to enable seven-day-a-week production.
Scaling up
“Meli is currently the undisputed market leader in the Benelux, together with our Dutch subsidiary Imkerij de Traay,” says CEO Koen Steurbaut. “Our honey is sold domestically and exported to France, Germany, Italy and Scandinavia. By 2030, we intend to scale up significantly and expand our presence in these international markets.”
Founded in 1925 by Alberic Florizoone, Meli now produces around 20,000 tonnes of honey a year. As part of its centenary celebrations, the company is also launching a refreshed brand identity, including updated labels and a new logo, and will mark the occasion with a celebratory event at Plopsaland, formerly known as Meli Park.
