Bruges Set to Open New Contemporary Art Hall Brusk

On 20 and 21 September, Bruges will celebrate the opening of its new contemporary art hall, Brusk, with a festive weekend. Though exhibitions begin in 2026, the public can explore the building this autumn, with street theatre troupe La Machine and large-scale installations marking the occasion., reports 24brussels.

After nearly three years of construction, the Brusk art hall is ready for its debut. Adjacent to the Groeninge Museum, Brusk is part of a larger cultural development initiative that aims to integrate it into a museum park in Bruges by 2030. While the first exhibitions are slated to open in May 2026, the venue’s architectural features and artistic concept will be showcased starting this September.

Highlights of the Opening Weekend

One of the main attractions during the opening weekend will be La Grande Araignée, a 13-meter-tall, 37-tonne mechanical spider created by the French company La Machine. This installation will traverse the city, acting as a dynamic piece of art. “La Machine’s visit is about more than just spectacle. It’s a powerful symbol of the bold, unifying energy that Brusk brings to Bruges,” stated Mayor Dirk de Fauw.

Inside Brusk, visitors will experience a large-scale tape art installation by the collective Numen/For Use, designed as a climbable web-like structure. This installation will be enhanced by a soundscape from Bruges composer Patrick Hamilton.

Meanwhile, the Belgian collective Lyapunov will perform on a 400-meter-long slackline suspended 70 meters above ground level, linking the Belfry and the Church of Our Lady. On Sunday, performers will create a breathtaking display as they descend toward Brusk, incorporating elements of tightrope walking, aerial dance, and live music.

The events surrounding the opening of Brusk represent a significant cultural moment for Bruges, aiming to merge artistic expression with community engagement. As preparations continue, the city looks forward to welcoming both locals and tourists to partake in this new cultural space.
