Gentse Feesten Attracts 1.6 Million Visitors Amidst Mixed Reports

The Gentse Feesten drew approximately 1,595,000 attendees in Ghent this year, a decrease of around 115,000 compared to 2024. Joris Vandenbroucke, the city’s festivities mayor, described the event as a “wonderful edition”., reports 24brussels.

Held from July 18 to July 27, the Gentse Feesten is a cultural festival that has been celebrated for over 50 years, showcasing music, theatre, and street performances among nearly 3,500 free activities throughout the city.

On the final day of the festival, approximately 130,000 people gathered in the city center. Despite the drop in overall visitors compared to the previous year, Vandenbroucke noted that the atmosphere remained vibrant and enjoyable.

Balancing Celebration and Liveability

Vandenbroucke expressed pride in the successful balance between celebration and the well-being of Ghent’s population of around 270,000. He remarked that this led to fewer noise complaints and greater tolerance among residents.

“We have shown that it is possible: a vibrant city and satisfied residents,”

The mayor acknowledged the residents of the city center for their patience and indicated an intent to maintain this balance in future events.

Incidents Reported During the Festival

However, the festival was not without challenges. Authorities reported 91 altercations during the event, and the fire brigade responded to 34 emergency situations. The Red Cross treated 2,292 individuals, with 174 requiring hospitalization. The hotline for inappropriate behavior received 51 reports, including 19 allegations of sexual misconduct.

Vandenbroucke highlighted that the significant attendance was attributable to the festival’s extensive, accessible, and diverse programming, which remained successful despite varying weather conditions. The next Gentse Feesten is scheduled for July 17 to July 26, 2026.
