Ghent Nightclub Cancels DJ Performance Amid Allegations
The Kompass Klub nightclub in Ghent has cancelled the planned performance of American DJ Fantasma at its reopening night on 3 October, the venue announced on Instagram on Wednesday. The decision follows allegations of sexual misconduct against Fantasma, who resides in Lyon and previously performed at Tomorrowland this past July. In light of these accusations, the Dour festival had previously removed him from its line-up earlier this summer, reports 24brussels.
The Kompass had specifically booked Fantasma for its relaunch within the Vynckier building on the Nieuwevaart. This decision ignited a substantial debate on social media, as supporters and critics voiced their opinions. The management of the club stated that the venue also received threats amid the controversy.
In an Instagram post, the Kompass Klub explained that the decision was made “after days of thorough and respectful dialogue with all parties involved.” They emphasized the need to avoid succumbing to pressure from “a hateful comment section and social media campaigns.” The club’s statement highlighted a flood of honest, confidential input received through a dedicated mailbox, which included perspectives from ravers, artists, potential victims, and industry professionals.
Support for Victims of Sexual Assault
Kompass reiterated its rejection of all forms of sexual violence and committed to taking concrete actions. Profits from the reopening event will be directed to an organization providing legal and psychological assistance to sexual assault victims. Additionally, a licensed psychologist will be available free of charge at future events, complementing the professional medical staff.
“We will always put our money where our mouth is,” the statement concluded. “Let’s focus on what really matters: respect your fellow humans and look after each other.”
