Restoration of Leuven’s City Hall Scheduled to Begin in October 2025
The restoration and repurposing of Leuven’s city hall will commence on 1 October 2025, with expected completion in 2029. The project is anticipated to cost 35 million euros, as announced by Leuven’s city council on Monday.
Leuven’s Gothic city hall, which dates back to the 15th century, required three architects and thirty years to construct. Subsequent to 1850, 235 statues were added to its facade.
The extensive restoration will involve both interior and exterior work. In preparation, facade statues have been covered and interior elements evaluated. The focus will be on sustainability, modern techniques, and full accessibility.
One of the primary goals of the restoration is to enhance public accessibility. A new entrance is planned on Leuven’s Grote Markt, the city’s central square, to facilitate this initiative.
“It will be a place where you can really experience history, where the stories of the city are told, and where our residents can work together on the future of Leuven,” stated Leuven’s mayor, Mohamed Ridouani.
Once the work is finalized, the city hall will resume hosting weddings, receptions, and city council meetings, thereby reinvigorating its role within the community.
