Mu.ZEE relocates to Venetian Galleries for world premiere of new sea-themed exhibition

Mu.ZEE’s Major Renovation Leads to Temporary Relocation

Mu.ZEE has temporarily relocated its exhibitions to the Venetian Galleries on Ostend’s seafront, following the closure of its main building for a three-year renovation that began in January 2025. The new show, titled It’s Sunday at the Sea!, showcases the artistic relationship between people and the North Sea, running until February, reports 24brussels.

The exhibition features works from 1880 to the present, emphasizing the sea’s calming and overwhelming nature. “The sea encourages reflection and imagination,” the museum stated, highlighting how artists have depicted it in various forms—both in reality and through memory.

Among the notable artists included in the exhibition are James Ensor, Léon Spilliaert, and Lili Dujourie. Dujourie’s video installation, which incorporates the poem Vers la mer by Émile Verhaeren, reflects on the daily changes of the sea.

In addition to displaying art, visitors to the Venetian Galleries can get a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s practice, including a new art depot showcasing a recently acquired piece by Anna Boch. The available space provides insights into the storage, preparation, and maintenance of artworks.

While Mu.ZEE’s main building remains closed, it continues programming through partnerships with the Permekemuseum in Jabbeke and the Peiremuzee in Knokke-Heist, alongside collaborations in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Drogenbos, and Koksijde.
