Brussels to Host World Premiere of Smurfs Movie

Brussels will be adorned in blue this Saturday as it hosts the world premiere of “Smurfs,” a live-action adaptation based on Peyo’s beloved comic series. Rihanna, who lends her voice to the character Smurfette and contributed to the film’s soundtrack, is expected to be in attendance., reports 24brussels.

This event marks the first major premiere in Brussels since 2011, when Steven Spielberg’s “Tintin” film debuted. Belgium’s rich history in comic books continues to attract Hollywood figures to the capital.

The Smurfs, created by Belgian comic artist Peyo in 1958, are iconic blue creatures dwelling in mushroom-shaped houses deep within the forest. Anny Schmit, managing director at Paramount Pictures, described the premiere as a “unique opportunity” to highlight the Belgian origin of the Smurfs, stating, “During the event, we will make it clear that the Smurfs are Belgian.”

Festivities and Events

Celebratory activities will kick off on Friday night with notable locations such as the Grand Place illuminated in blue. Saturday will see the famous statue Manneken Pis dressed in a Smurf costume, while families are invited to explore Smurf Village at Mont des Arts, featuring various free attractions.

Later that day, the film’s cast, including Rihanna, will walk the blue carpet stretching from Place Royale to Mont des Arts. Approximately 700 guests from both Belgium and abroad are invited to the premiere, alongside around 300 fans who will have the chance to see the crew in a designated fan zone.

The movie is scheduled to debut in cinemas on July 16, directed by Chris Miller and written by Pam Brady. This marks the fourth installment in the Smurfs cinematic series. In May, Rihanna released “Friend of Mine,” a song featured in the film’s soundtrack, which represents her first musical offering in three years.
