Amazon’s New AI Statistics Revolutionize NBA Game Analysis
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is set to provide NBA fans with cutting-edge analysis of players and games during the 2025–2026 season through its advanced AI technology and detailed movement tracking, reports 24brussels.
The new features, part of the “NBA Inside the Game” platform, will offer more comprehensive player metrics. The system will track 29 body parts of each player, although AWS has not disclosed the exact details of the tracking process. This initiative aims to provide insights that capture aspects of the game that were previously unmeasured.
Players will be analyzed not just by shot outcomes but also by the difficulty of their attempts. A new statistic called the Expected Field Goal Percentage will assess the likelihood of a successful shot based on various factors, including the positioning of defenders and the player’s shooting stance.
The platform also introduces a stat named Gravity, designed to quantify the advantages players create on the court. It will analyze player movements against defenders to determine how well they create space for teammates. Additionally, a new metric known as the Defensive Score Box will evaluate defenders’ performances, breaking down traditional statistics like rebounds and blocks.
Fans will have access to these new statistics during live broadcasts of NBA games, as well as through the NBA app and website. This initiative is not the first collaboration between the NBA and Amazon; in 2024, they established an 11-year deal to stream 66 regular-season games annually on Prime Video, starting on October 24th.
With this new partnership, AWS serves as the official cloud and cloud AI partner for the NBA and its affiliated leagues, including the WNBA. The integration of advanced analytics into live sports broadcasts reflects a broader trend in the industry, with leagues increasingly leveraging technology to enhance fan engagement and improve player assessments.
