Ant Group Unveils Humanoid Robot in AI Robotics Race
Chinese tech giant Ant Group has introduced its first humanoid robot, the R1, at tech conferences this month, signaling its entry into the global competition to develop AI-powered automation technologies, reports 24brussels.
At the IFA 2025 tech show in Berlin, videos demonstrated the R1 preparing shrimp for onlookers. This unveiling is part of a broader initiative by Ant Group, a subsidiary of Alibaba, to establish a foothold in the burgeoning field of automation through innovative applications of artificial intelligence.
The humanoid robot has also been showcased at the ongoing 2025 Inclusion Conference in Shanghai, expanding its visibility in major tech forums. Ant Group has indicated that the R1 is just the beginning, with plans for the robot to serve various roles including a companion or caregiver in healthcare and a robotic guide in tourism.
While the company has yet to announce a release date or pricing details, the R1 is currently undergoing testing in community centers and restaurants. Experts advise caution in interpreting the company’s claims regarding the robot’s capabilities, particularly as initial demonstrations have drawn skepticism regarding its performance speed and autonomy.
Ant Group joins a roster of firms, including Elon Musk’s Tesla, in the competitive landscape of AI and robotics. Historically, challenges in the sector have included unfulfilled promises and sluggish advancements. Nevertheless, technological developments in software are hoped to catalyze significant progress, possibly overcoming previous limitations in AI robotics.
