Apple Blocks iTorrent from Alternative iOS Stores

Apple has prohibited the distribution of iTorrent, an iPhone torrenting client, from the AltStore PAL alternative iOS marketplace in the EU, demonstrating its continued control over apps not listed in the official App Store. Developer Daniil Vinogradov informed that Apple has revoked his rights to distribute apps via any alternative iOS stores, indicating that the issue is not specifically linked to AltStore PAL itself, reports 24brussels.

“Apple removed Alternative Distribution functionality from iTorrent’s Developer Portal without any warning,” Vinogradov stated. According to him, Apple has not provided an explanation for this removal, which affected his distribution rights at the Apple Developer Account level. AltStore PAL is currently investigating the matter.

While Apple prohibits torrent apps in its own iOS store, the EU’s Digital Markets Act has granted iPhone users within the bloc increased freedoms to install applications from third-party app stores not directly overseen by Apple. iTorrent was added to AltStore PAL in July last year, raising questions about the timing and impetus for its recent removal.
