The Next Boox Palma: A Potential Smartphone Replacement
Boox’s upcoming Palma device may redefine the e-reader market with features resembling those of a smartphone. Early insights reveal a color E Ink display and cellular connectivity, making the new Palma a likely contender as a fully-functional smartphone, reports 24brussels.
While not publicly showcased at the IFA 2025 event, Boox gave a preview of the Palma to Jess Weatherbed from The Verge. Although technical specifications remain undisclosed, indications are that the Palma will offer enhanced connectivity options, which could bridge the gap between traditional e-readers and smartphones.
Previous versions of the Boox Palma, powered by Android, featured a 6.13-inch black-and-white e-paper screen. However, Boox has been at the forefront of adopting color E Ink technology, introducing color e-readers ahead of giants like Amazon and Kobo.
Despite advancements, the most sought-after enhancement from Palma users is cellular connectivity. Current models only support Wi-Fi, limiting functionality. Fans have long expressed a need for mobile data options, essential for taking advantage of the device’s nearly smartphone-like experience, which includes dual microphones and a rear camera.
The specifics regarding SIM card support, reliance on eSIMs, or compatible cellular networks have yet to be confirmed. Nevertheless, the next-generation Palma is poised to offer a distraction-free experience akin to devices like the Bigme Hibreak Pro, targeting users who seek an alternative to conventional smartphones while enjoying extended battery life and a simplistic interface.
