Framework reveals new laptop designs including haptic touchpad, Trackpoint and eGPU prototypes

Framework Launches Second-Gen Laptop Featuring First Home Upgradable Nvidia GPU

Framework has unveiled the second generation of its Framework Laptop 16, introducing industry-first features including the capability to upgrade the Nvidia graphics card at home in just minutes and a complete 240W USB-C charging solution, reports 24brussels.

The announcement highlights significant advancements, notably the ability for users to conduct GPU upgrades without professional help. The new laptop model is also set to revolutionize laptop charging with its innovative USB-C solution.

While some developments fell short of making the final cut, Framework shared insights into various intriguing prototypes, including a larger haptic touchpad similar to those found in Apple’s MacBooks and an external graphics module (eGPU). CEO Nirav Patel acknowledged ongoing challenges to integrate popular features like the ThinkPad Trackpoint due to technical constraints in achieving the desired design.

Despite setbacks, Patel confirmed that a wider haptic touchpad is in development, aiming to enhance user experience without necessitating modular spacers. Framework plans to provide 3D files for users to print their palm rests to further customize their devices.

Explaining the rationale behind the new Nvidia RTX 5070 graphics module, Patel noted that the module is limited to 8GB of RAM due to space constraints, emphasizing the need for designs that prioritize both performance and portability. “For this generation, 5070 8GB is it,” Patel stated, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable use of graphics technology and reducing electronic waste.

The announcement reflects Framework’s ongoing commitment to innovation and user customization, aiming to redefine the laptop experience for modern consumers.
