Google Introduces New Account Recovery Features to Enhance Security
On October 15, 2025, Google unveiled new account recovery tools aimed at simplifying the process for users who find themselves locked out of their accounts. Instead of relying on traditional security questions or recovery email addresses, the tech giant now allows account holders to verify their identities using a linked mobile number or trusted contacts, reports 24brussels.
The newly introduced Recovery Contacts feature allows users to designate individuals who can confirm their identity to regain access after a hack, loss of password, or forgotten passkey. While Google has not detailed the specific verification process, it stated that the feature offers “a simple and secure way to regain access when standard recovery methods fail.” This feature is currently available for eligible personal Google accounts and can be found in the Security section of account settings.
In addition, Google is launching Sign in with Mobile Number, a feature tailored for Android users. This tool automatically recognizes Google accounts using a linked phone number and facilitates account recovery on a new Android device without requiring a password. Instead, users will need to input the lock-screen passcode from their previous device. Google indicated that this feature will be gradually rolled out worldwide.
These tools form part of Google’s broader initiative to enhance user security and protect against increasing threats from scams and hackers. The company is also introducing new features in Google Messages designed to alert users about potentially malicious links in spam messages. Furthermore, a new Key Verifier tool aims to simplify the process of verifying contacts, thereby helping users avoid impersonators and fraudsters.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, Google’s latest measures reflect a proactive approach to ensuring users have secure and accessible means to protect their accounts.
