Instagram launches new Map feature amid concerns over user privacy and location sharing

Shortly after the launch of Instagram’s new Map feature, user backlash has emerged across social media channels. Critics are expressing concerns that the platform is mimicking Snapchat’s Snap Maps while failing to prioritize user safety. Worries extend beyond mere annoyance to serious concerns regarding potential privacy breaches and the exposure of vulnerable individuals, such as victims of domestic abuse, to stalking risks.

Meta has described the feature as an “opt-in” mechanism that allows users to selectively share their location with chosen friends and browse content from friends and creators based on tagged locations in their posts and Reels.

How to turn your location off on the Instagram Map

For those wishing to deactivate location sharing on Instagram Maps, steps are available to disable the feature on both Android and iOS devices. Initially, users should navigate to the Messages section within the app. From there, tap on “Map” at the top of the inbox, access “Settings” located in the upper right corner, and select “no one” to limit visibility. Finally, users must confirm their changes by tapping “Update” at the bottom of the screen.

If a user has not enabled location access for the app, Instagram states that the map feature will remain disabled by default, thus preventing access to relevant settings.

Why are you seeing people on your Instagram Map who haven’t enabled the feature or opted in?

According to Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, users may see location-tagged posts and Reels reflected in the map interface, which can easily mislead them into thinking it’s a live-tracked location. He clarified, “Your last reel is showing up on the map, not your current location. Your live location is not being shared, and it will never be unless you decide to share it.” Furthermore, Mosseri assured users that design improvements would be implemented promptly, potentially within the coming week.

The introduction of location features has reignited debates surrounding user privacy and safety on social platforms, emphasizing the need for greater transparency and user control.

In light of these events, public sentiment reflects a wider apprehension about the balance between social media connectivity and user privacy rights. As these discussions continue, the impact of such features on user experience and safety remains critical.
