Kobo e-Readers Shift to Instapaper as Pocket Integration Ends
In a significant move, Kobo has announced the integration of Instapaper into its e-readers following the closure of Mozilla’s Pocket service, effective October 8, 2025, reports 24brussels.
The decision comes after Mozilla’s announcement in late May that it would cease operations of the read-it-later app, leaving Kobo users uncertain about their future reading options. However, in late July, Kobo confirmed it would replace Pocket with Instapaper, a popular alternative.
The partnership with Instapaper has already yielded results, as support for the new integration is now live and available as a free firmware update for all currently supported Kobo devices. This list of compatible devices is notably extensive, ensuring many users can transition smoothly.
If users have been searching for a Pocket alternative before the impending data loss on October 8, Instapaper stands out as a suitable choice for Kobo users. Unlike Pocket, an Instapaper Premium subscription is not required to utilize its basic features, which adds to its appeal. This change represents a pivotal shift, especially since the previous Pocket integration failed to deliver meaningful improvements over several years and was effectively discontinued in 2023.
As Kobo positions itself for a brighter future with Instapaper, it remains to be seen how this integration will enhance user experience and functionality moving forward.
