Logitech introduces the K980, a light-powered keyboard with no need for sunlight

Logitech Launches New Solar-Powered Keyboard, K980

Logitech has introduced its new solar-powered keyboard, the K980, which charges through both natural and artificial light, even at a minimum of 200 lux. This model marks the company’s return to solar technology after over a decade, with a retail price of $99.99, reports 24brussels.

The K980 is designed with a battery that can sustain usage for up to four months in complete darkness once fully charged, reportedly capable of lasting up to ten years under optimal conditions. Unlike traditional keyboards, the K980 lacks a USB port or replaceable batteries, relying solely on its ability to harness light for power.

Logitech spokesperson Melvin Dilanchian confirmed that the K980’s battery is user-replaceable and will be available as a spare part through iFixIt. Alongside its innovative charging capabilities, the keyboard features a standard layout compatible with both Windows and macOS, a microphone mute button, and an AI Launch key, which is pre-programmed to activate Copilot on Windows systems and can be customized according to user preferences.

The new AI key is part of Logitech’s broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into everyday technology, allowing users to access applications like ChatGPT directly from the keyboard. Users can assign functions to other keys as well, enhancing customization through the Logi Options Plus application.

This release comes amidst a renewed interest in solar-powered technology, with competitors like Lenovo also unveiling self-charging keyboards earlier this year. While Logitech’s K980 aims to lead the market, the entry of alternatives highlights a growing trend in sustainable tech across the industry.

With an increasing focus on functionality, the K980 accommodates connections with up to three Bluetooth devices, offering a seamless transition between devices at the push of a button. The lack of built-in LED indicators for ambient light is a notable shift from previous models; now, the keyboard uses a power LED that changes from green to red when charging is insufficient.

As companies embrace innovative energy solutions, the K980 stands out for its commitment to sustainability while offering practical features for modern users. Logitech continues to push boundaries in peripheral technology as consumer expectations evolve towards multifunctional and eco-friendly devices.
