Meta Introduces Group Chats on Threads, Expanding Messaging Features

Meta has launched a new group chat feature on its Threads platform, enabling users to engage in conversations with up to 50 participants. This update comes as part of a broader effort to enhance messaging capabilities across the platform, reports 24brussels.

Users can initiate a group chat by selecting multiple friends who follow their Threads account, a move aimed at streamlining communication and reducing the need to send individual direct messages. The group chat feature allows for customizable names to help users identify discussions by topic or individuals involved, akin to the functionality seen on Facebook Messenger.

The rollout of group chat support is global, though it currently excludes users in the UK and Australia. Meta spokesperson Alec Booker noted that the company is prioritizing an expansion to these regions “as quickly as possible.” Upcoming updates are expected to introduce enhanced inbox management tools, as well as a feature that allows users to invite others to group chats via link sharing, rather than adding them one by one.

This introduction of group messaging coincides with Threads’ expansion of individual direct messaging and group chat capabilities to the EU, which is set to occur “over the next few days.” This strategic move highlights Meta’s commitment to enhancing the user experience and engagement on its social media platforms as competition intensifies in the digital communication landscape.

As Threads seeks to carve out its space in the crowded social media market, the addition of group chats reflects a significant step toward adapting to users’ growing demand for versatile communication options. Whether this will enhance user retention and attract new users remains to be seen, but the company’s continued investment in features appears designed to keep pace with evolving social networking trends.

In a market increasingly defined by diverse messaging solutions, Meta’s initiative could represent a pivotal moment for Threads, potentially redefining how users interact on this emerging platform.
