Meta Unveils Wearable Device Access Toolkit for Developers
Meta has announced the launch of a new Wearable Device Access Toolkit that will enable developers to utilize the visual and audio capabilities of its smart glasses, reports 24brussels.
The toolkit will provide access to a range of on-device sensors, allowing developers to create features leveraging the benefits of AI glasses. “Our first version of the toolkit will open up access to a suite of on-device sensors— empowering you to start building features within your mobile apps that leverage the hands-free benefits of AI glasses,” Meta stated. The company emphasized that developers will be able to utilize the wearer’s natural perspective and the clarity of open-ear audio and microphone access.
Meta has shared several potential applications of the toolkit. For example, streaming platform Twitch plans to enable creators to livestream directly from their glasses, while Disney’s Imagineering R&D team is exploring prototypes that could provide visitors at Disney parks with access to real-time tips through the glasses.
Currently, developers can join a waitlist to preview the toolkit, which is expected to be available later this year. However, Meta has indicated that widespread publishing capabilities are not anticipated until 2026. The initial version will allow only limited audiences to experience the functionalities. Given the popularity of the previous Ray-Ban Meta glasses and the promising features of the new smart glasses, there is likely to be significant interest from developers in testing this toolkit.
As the tech landscape continues to evolving with a focus on wearables, the introduction of Meta’s toolkit signals a strategic move to harness the growing demand for hands-free, augmented reality applications. Developers are urged to consider the potential of incorporating wearable technology into their offerings while the market for such devices expands.
