Microsoft and Phison Deny SSD Failure Claims Amid Windows Update Reports
Recent claims regarding failures of SSDs with Phison controllers following the latest Windows 11 updates have prompted responses from both Microsoft and Phison, who assert they couldn’t replicate the issues reported on social media, reports 24brussels.
Concerns surged in the following weeks after users reported data corruption and disappearing drives, leading tech influencers on platforms like YouTube and TikTok to attribute the problems directly to Microsoft. Despite these assertions, both companies maintain the incidents lack substantiation. Phison acknowledged the issue on August 18, commencing an investigation that culminated in a statement on August 27, revealing they had conducted over 2,200 test cycles totaling over 4,500 hours without reproducing the reported failures.
In support of Phison’s findings, Microsoft elaborated shortly thereafter, stating, “After thorough investigation, Microsoft has found no connection between the August 2025 Windows security update and the types of hard drive failures reported on social media.”
Despite the rapid spread of these claims, evidence remains limited. The initial report seemingly stemmed from a Japanese user’s suggestion on Twitter, with some commenters alleging similar experiences. However, the lack of widespread evidence raises the possibility that the purported issue could be confined to a faulty batch of drives rather than a systemic flaw associated with the security update. Users are advised to remain cautious and not to attribute drive failures solely to the August 2025 Windows update, regardless of claims circulating on social media.
