Microsoft Enhances Paint App with New Features
On September 17, 2025, Microsoft announced significant updates to its Paint application for Windows 11, including the introduction of Photoshop-like features such as project file saving and opacity sliders, reports 24brussels.
The new functionalities are currently being tested by Windows Insiders in the Dev and Canary Channels. Users will soon be able to save their Paint creations as editable project files, similar to Photoshop Document (.PSD) files. “You can now save your creation as an editable Paint project file and seamlessly pick up where you left off,” explained Dave Grochocki, principal product manager lead for Microsoft’s Windows inbox apps.
These Paint project files will use a .paint file extension and will store layers within the file. “When you’re ready to return, simply open the file to launch it in Paint, right where you left off,” Grochocki added.
Additionally, Microsoft is adding opacity sliders, allowing users to adjust the transparency of the pencil and brush tools. “To get started, select either tool and use the slider on the left side of the canvas to adjust the opacity to your desired level,” he stated.
Microsoft is also enhancing the Snipping Tool, introducing a quick markup feature that facilitates screenshot annotations. This update includes tools for highlighting, drawing, and erasing, along with an easy method to re-crop images.
Moreover, Microsoft is incorporating AI-powered features into Notepad for Copilot Plus PC users, enabling write, summarization, and rewriting functionalities. This will be available without the need for a Microsoft 365 subscription, allowing users to switch seamlessly between local and cloud models based on their needs.
As Microsoft continues to innovate its applications, these enhancements aim to improve user experience and cater to evolving needs in digital creativity.
