OneXSugar unveils first dual-screen transforming handheld device

Prototype of OneXSugar Sugar 1 Gaming Handheld Unveiled

One-Netbook has introduced a groundbreaking handheld gaming device, the OneXSugar Sugar 1, which features dual OLED screens and a unique transformable design. The prototype demonstrates an innovative approach to portable gaming, allowing users to switch between different configurations seamlessly, reports 24brussels.

The device, currently in crowdfunding on Indiegogo, comes with two power buttons, two volume controls, and two hinges that allow for various gaming modes. When folded, it resembles a Nintendo Switch, and when opened, it can function similarly to a Nintendo DS.

The Sugar 1 is designed to handle demanding games, reportedly running titles such as Genshin Impact on high settings, thanks to its Qualcomm Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 processor and 16GB of RAM. Early tests suggest that it could even run original Nintendo Switch games with the appropriate software drivers.

While the device has garnered excitement, questions remain about its viability ahead of its planned September shipping date. The early bird pricing has been set at $599, with a retail price expected to reach $799.

User feedback on the prototype highlights the impressive multitasking capabilities of the device. Unlike other dual-screen phones, the Sugar 1 allows users to assign applications to either screen, facilitating enhanced productivity and entertainment options. Users can even disable one screen to conserve battery life.

Despite its innovative features, concerns about the prototype’s hinge durability have been raised. The final version is expected to have more robust hinges made from SK7 tool steel, ensuring a more durable construction.

The device has received praise for its comfortable handling, with responsive controls and well-designed grips. However, the absence of a dedicated D-pad has been noted. Instead, a magnetic D-pad sits atop face buttons, which some users find causes unintended presses.

Software issues, particularly regarding the unfinished Android user interface, have been a point of concern. The Sugar 1 is set to launch with Android 14, but there is ambiguity regarding future updates for enhanced game compatibility. Initial feedback suggests that certain applications may not work optimally on the device.

Charging and multitasking across both screens have presented challenges, but the company has indicated that these issues are being addressed through software updates. The flexibility of the dual screens is touted as a primary selling point, though the current lack of resizing options for games has frustrated some early users.

Issues with accessing the Google Play Store during the prototype phase have limited the range of testable applications. Nonetheless, One-Netbook has assured that final units will ship equipped with all necessary Google components, potentially improving functionality.

While the battery life remains uncertain, initial estimates from early testers range widely, suggesting variability based on game performance. It is anticipated that the Sugar 1 will appeal to a niche audience as One-Netbook aims to establish a foothold in the competitive Android gaming market.

As One-Netbook continues to work on refining the product, the company’s VP, Jason Zeng, emphasized the commitment to differentiate itself in the handheld gaming sector and the company’s ambition to explore future collaborations, including potential discussions with Valve regarding a SteamOS handheld.
