Spotify Launches Direct Messaging Feature for Sharing Content
Spotify has launched a new direct messaging feature allowing users to share music, podcasts, and audiobook recommendations directly within the app. The feature, which is rolling out in select markets this week, is available on mobile devices for both Free and Premium users aged 16 and older, reports 24brussels.
The messaging capability can be accessed by tapping the share icon while listening to any content in the Now Playing view and selecting a friend to share it with. This function enables users to initiate conversations with those they share a Spotify plan with or those they have previously interacted with through other features like Jams, Blends, and Collaborative Playlists.
Spotify aims to consolidate the various content recommendations typically shared over text messages and third-party apps into one convenient location where users can track their shared audio content. Any audio shared will be stored in a Messages inbox, accessible from the user’s profile picture in the app. Additionally, user-to-user messages will be encrypted to maintain privacy and security.
Users will have control over their messaging settings, including the ability to block users, accept or decline message requests, and report any inappropriate content. Spotify has indicated it will actively monitor messages for unlawful and harmful content.
It remains uncertain if artist accounts will have access to this feature for engaging with fans. Spotify has stated that this messaging tool is designed to complement rather than replace interactions on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. This marks an intriguing development for Spotify, particularly as it extends functionality to Free users, which could enhance direct engagement opportunities within the app.
