Tesla Cybertruck sales drop significantly as company shifts unsold units to Elon Musk’s firms

Tesla’s Cybertruck Sales Plummet as Musk Resorts to Unconventional Strategies

Sales of the Tesla Cybertruck have suffered a significant decline, with the automaker reporting just 5,385 units sold in the third quarter of 2025, marking a 63% drop from the previous year. This downturn follows a brutal few months for the company, contributing to escalating concerns surrounding the vehicle’s market viability, reports 24brussels.

In stark contrast to the more than 14,000 Cybertrucks delivered in the same period in 2024, Tesla’s overall delivery forecast for the Cybertruck has plunged to just 20,000 units for 2025, a far cry from Elon Musk’s earlier prediction of 250,000 annual sales. So far in 2025, the company has sold slightly over 16,000 units, reinforcing worries about the model’s appeal.

The third quarter coincided with a broader uptick in electric vehicle (EV) sales overall, reaching 438,487 units—up 40.7% from the previous quarter and 29.6% year-over-year. This surge was largely fueled by consumers eager to purchase before the expiration of a $7,500 federal tax credit on September 30, 2025. However, forecasts indicate sales may decline dramatically in the fourth quarter, potentially exacerbating the Cybertruck’s sales challenges.

While Cybertruck sales lag, other electric trucks have shown considerable growth. Rivian’s R1T is up 13% year over year, Ford’s F-150 Lightning has increased by 39.7%, and GMC’s Hummer EV has enjoyed a 21.9% boost, with its Sierra EV witnessing a staggering 771% surge.

Adding to the complications, families of two individuals killed in a fiery Cybertruck accident have filed lawsuits against Tesla, citing alleged faulty door handles that hindered escape during the incident. This legal challenge highlights concerns regarding safety standards associated with the new model.

In an unusual move, Elon Musk has begun transferring unsold Cybertrucks to his private companies, SpaceX and xAI. According to reports, the vehicles are intended to replace SpaceX’s traditional fleet of internal-combustion-engine vehicles, reflecting Musk’s commitment to integrating EV technology even in his other ventures.

The dismal acceptance of the Cybertruck starkly contrasts with Musk’s predictions and illustrates the challenges Tesla faces in maintaining its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market filled with similar electric vehicle offerings.
