Tivo Ends Hardware Production After 26 Years in the Industry
Tivo has officially ceased production of digital video recorders (DVRs), marking a significant shift after 26 years at the forefront of TV recording technology, reports 24brussels.
The company confirmed the discontinuation, stating that as of September 30, 2025, it has stopped selling its EDGE DVR products, including hardware and accessories, both online and through retail partners. “TiVo, and its partners, no longer manufacture TiVo DVR hardware, and our remaining inventory is now depleted,” the company said in a statement.
This decision follows a notable decline in demand for standalone DVRs as on-demand streaming services have proliferated, complemented by cable providers enhancing their offerings with cloud-based video recording options. Tivo will now pivot to focus on its role as a software provider for smart TVs and vehicle infotainment systems.
Despite exiting the hardware sector, Tivo announced it will provide support for its obsolete products moving forward. The last DVR released by Tivo, the TiVo Edge, came out in 2019 before the company’s merger with software firm Xperi in June 2020.
Industry experts point to shifting consumer preferences as a key factor in Tivo’s decision. The increasing reliance on streaming platforms and integrated television solutions paved the way for Tivo’s exit from hardware manufacturing. The company’s transformation reflects broader industry trends emphasizing software over hardware in an evolving media landscape.
