Belgian Cabinet to Discuss Geopolitical Situation Amid Israel’s Offensive

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever is set to convene the core cabinet of ministers next week to address the escalating “geopolitical situation,” including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza amid Israel’s ongoing military actions, reports 24brussels.

The meeting, likely to take place next Wednesday morning, is expected to be an exploratory discussion among governing parties, as differing opinions prevail on potential measures against Israel or recognition of Palestine.

In Belgium’s federal government, the parties Vooruit, CD&V, and Les Engagés are advocating for sanctions against Israel and recognition of Palestine. In contrast, De Wever’s N-VA and the MR oppose any measures, arguing that such actions would lack meaningful impact without U.S. support.

ICC Sanctions

The United States continues to show its unwavering support for Israel. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced sanctions against four judges and prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Wednesday, condemning what he termed “morally bankrupt and legally baseless actions” related to the ICC’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot expressed strong regret over the new sanctions, reaffirming Belgium’s commitment to the ICC and its autonomy.

Meanwhile, Israel has initiated its plan to take control of Gaza City, with its army commencing operation ‘Gideon’s Chariots II.’ Spokesperson Effie Defrin stated that the Israeli Defence Force is currently “holding the outskirts” of the city.

The international community, including Belgium, has urged Israel to halt its military actions, warning that continued offensives will result in increased casualties, destruction, and further displacement, without leading to the release of hostages.

Minister Prévot emphasized the need for restraint, as reiterated by the FPS Foreign Affairs.
