A Club Brugge supporter was injured by a bullet after Sunday’s Belgian Cup final between RSC Anderlecht and Club Brugge, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office has confirmed. No suspects have yet been arrested in connection with the shooting.

“A Bruges supporter was injured by a bullet in the ankle following a shooting at the Midi station yesterday evening at around 21.15,” said public prosecutor’s spokesperson Willemien Baert on Monday.

“The suspect managed to get away. A judicial perimeter was set up and a ballistics expert was called to the scene. Several additional investigative measures have been requested, including the analysis of CCTV footage. The investigation is still ongoing,” Baert said.

The victim told Het Laatste Nieuws that he and other Club Brugge supporters were attacked as they left the Brussels Midi metro by a group armed with baseball bats, sticks, glass bottles and a cleaver.

“Suddenly I thought fireworks had exploded on my foot, but it was a bullet wound,” the fan told the newspaper. The man was taken to Sint-Pieters hospital, but his injuries were not serious. The bullet did not hit any muscles or tendons.

63 arrests

The football final on Sunday caused many incidents in Brussels. The police made 61 administrative arrests and two judicial arrests. The latter two suspects were handed over to the public prosecutor’s office.

“One is a minor who was arrested for intentional assault and battery. The other suspect is an adult who was arrested for intentional assault and battery against the police,” Baert said.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, further investigations are needed in both cases, including the analysis of camera footage. “Perpetrators identified at a later stage will be prosecuted,” Baert said.
